The George Group and Colin Dawson
have over 35 years experience in the marine insurance industry in London and Hong Kong, including 28 specialising with yacht insurance. During this time Colin has been closely involved with the yacht industry from local cruising to offshore racing, sitting on race organising and club operational committees.
He, along with 3 fellow industry players, set up the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association (APSA) in 2011 https://apsuperyacht.org (standing down in 2016) and is now part of the Global Marine Business Advisors https://www.gmba.blue/ - a group of 22 long standing yacht industry specialists across 21 countries. He is closely involved with Hong Kong’s push to be a global hub for visiting yachts and works behind the scenes with both APSA and the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association to help them achieve their aims.
This experience has given Colin a wealth of knowledge to advise owners and industry alike on the ownership and operation of yachts. His connections allow him to connect people with the right people they need to be speaking with and to give impartial, honest and clear advice on a route through the often complex world of yachts

With over 28 years experience in handling yacht claims and arranging yacht insurance programmes Colin is able to work with owners and captains to help them reduce the chances of a loss occurring to their yacht, saving them money, time and yacht down time while helping create a safer environment for the crew, family and guests on board. Often including the need to discuss some hard truths, Colin’s experience helps smooth what can be some difficult discussions between the preparation, operation and enjoyment of a yacht
A part of loss prevention is Colin’s involvement with a company that makes units that prevent lightning strikes rather than the more traditional rod that attracts it and then tries to take it to ground. Often insurers impose very high deductibles for lighting strikes and, while the cost of installation if not cheap, it’s certainly a lot less than these deductibles and removes the severe hassle a strike causes, including long repair times and the uncertainty that follows a lighting strike
An increasingly important aspect of cover is how a yacht is owned and flagged and if you are thinking of changing we are able to assist with this if desired. We work with a corporate services company in Hong Kong who is very experienced at setting up SPV’s and I also work with the Cook Islands and Langkawi registries to assist people if they wish to re-flag their yachts
